Development of Techniques The manufacturing techniques of stained glass have undergone several stages of development.

The earliest stained glass windows appeared in the 11th century, with techniques that marking out patterns on wooden boards, cutting glass, and embedding it in lead strips. From the 12th to the 14th centuries, lead strips used to form pictures in the window grids, with stained glass set in between. Over time, the development of glass painting techniques reduced the importance of lead strips and glass was often white glass with colored overlays.
