The mechanical properties of quartz mirrors are better than those of hard mirrors and ceramics, but they are less brittle. The theoretical calculation value of the quartz mirror is very high, about 24×103MPa, but the actual measured strength is several times lower than this. The main factors affecting the strength are the surface defects of the mirror, especially the size and depth of the surface micro-cracks. The flexural strength of the quartz mirror sample is about 0.6 times that of the rough grinding; the second is the internal defect. Such as bubbles, impurities, uneven melting and residual stress. As the temperature increases, the strength of the quartz mirror reaches close to the annealing temperature.

The shear modulus, Young’s modulus, damping, Poisson’s ratio and modulus of quartz mirrors generally increase with increasing temperature, and the hardness increases with increasing temperature.
